We did it!
Congrats, Road Hazahds, together with a big blurpy orange man and a rubber chicken, you rand 200-ish miles from Hull to Provincetown (Hull to Provincetown). You were still running when the sun went down. You kept running, and then, you were still running when the sun came up again.
That’s a little bit of an inside joke – we’ll reveal more there in a few weeks.
Last year, Captain Roof Stomp (James) shared the story of getting together a bunch of misfits, err, runners together to run from Hull to Provincetown, and you can read about that on his blog here. This year, enough people wanted to do it that it seemed like the team nearly formed itself! But then we had these pesky weddings that got scheduled (congrats, Sean!), and we lost a couple runners to health issues, too. We sorely missed both Baby Chef and Lady Dion, and look forward to complete health and shenanigans (both running and otherwise) in the future!
With the team mostly formed, we still had a couple open spots, and were fortunate enough to meet Joe (that’s “HeadGeek” to you), Vanessa, and Kim, who showed up strong and ready to run. Unlike last year, everyone showed up at the rendezvous on time Friday morning, and we rolled out towards Hull, with van 2 taking a detour to pick up a few folks who were kind of “on the way.”
Friday was beautiful. The whole team gathered for some pre-race photos and to cheer Thundersnow (AKA Matt) on as he led off on leg one of Ragnar Cape Cod.
Van 2 headed out for breakfast (mmmm… delicious) while Dethan, Craig, and Kim ran their first rotations.
Due to a last minute medical drop, van 1 was short one runner, and as they wound through their rotation, HeadGeek ran leg 5, and being a glutton for miles, he ran leg 6, too, before handing off to Roof Stomp.
Our fearless leader headed off in a J Walking running kilt and spiffy red shoes.
That first rotation went mostly without incident. The vans were decorated…
And Ragnar virgins Loo Boo (Mark) and the Notorious D.A.D. (Mike) began to get a sense of what they had gotten into, while Katie, Vanessa, and the Vertical Queen (Nataleigh) showed them their veteran moves, going out hard, but not TOO hard! When Notorious D.A.D. finished his first leg, Van 1 headed off into the night while Van 2 went out for pizza before crashing for a few hours.
From here, we could tell you many tales of heroism and stamina, or we could simply tell you that each van thinks they had the best pizza ever (yet somehow ended up at different restaurants). We gave away fig Newtons to hungry runners, and Roof Stomp and Craig picked up an additional leg each. Thanks to a little bit of injury that needed to be overcome (break a foot, tear an Achilles, whatever), and maybe a little less training than planned, we were a little bit slow this year, but finish we did! Katie rolled into P-Town before 7 PM, and the crew headed down the road for fish, burgers, pizza, and beer. All in all, a very successful Ragnar, but the best part of this post is that the story is not over. Sure, you’ve read a bit of a recap, but you don’t really know the story until you see our video.
…which is still in production, so please bear with us while we finish editing.
In the meantime, here are some photos to enjoy!
